Free Resource Guide — Woodberry Place, Matara
The best books, websites, apps, and free resources for IELTS preparation — curated by our TEFL/TESOL certified instructor based on what actually works for students at Woodberry Place.
Section 1
These are the official and most trusted books for IELTS preparation. Each has real test papers with audio and answer keys.
The gold standard for IELTS practice. Authentic test papers published by Cambridge University Press — the same organisation that runs the IELTS exam. Each book has 4 full practice tests with audio for Listening.
Excellent for understanding how IELTS Writing is marked. Includes model answers with examiner commentary. Covers both Task 1 and Task 2 at each band level so you can see what a 6.0 vs 7.0 essay looks like.
A course book that builds skills across all four modules. Strong vocabulary focus. Upper Intermediate targets Band 6.5, Advanced targets Band 7.0+. Good for structured self-study over 6–8 weeks.
Dedicated speaking guide with sample answers, common topic lists, and examiner tips. Covers all three parts of the speaking test. Useful alongside a real speaking partner or class.
Section 2
These free websites offer practice tests, sample answers, and tips verified by IELTS experts. No registration needed for most.
The official IELTS website has free sample test materials, the official test format guide, and registration information. The free Sample Test is a must-try before any paid resource.
One of the most popular free IELTS blogs. Thousands of free lessons, tips, model answers, and video walkthroughs. Particularly strong for Writing Task 2 and Speaking — updated regularly.
British Council and IDP both offer free mini-practice tests and skill-building exercises on their websites. They are the official IELTS test providers — their practice materials closely match the real exam.
Excellent for building listening skills, vocabulary, and grammar naturally. Podcasts, news stories with slow audio, grammar lessons, and pronunciation exercises. Great for daily use even outside IELTS prep.
Section 3
Free video lessons for every IELTS module. These channels are recommended because they are run by real IELTS experts with documented results.
The same trusted instructor from ieltsliz.com. Short, focused videos on specific grammar points, task types, and model answers. Use the Writing playlist first — it's the most comprehensive free resource available.
One of the largest IELTS YouTube channels. Regular live lessons, model answer walkthroughs, and speaking practice with students. Particularly good for seeing how an examiner evaluates answers in real-time.
Focused on Speaking and Writing with detailed explanation of band descriptors. Explains exactly what the examiner is marking and what separates a Band 6 answer from a Band 7 answer in practical terms.
Covers all modules with a focus on test-taking strategy. Very practical advice on time management and avoiding common mistakes. The Listening strategies playlist is especially well-explained for beginners.
Section 4
Practice on your phone during commutes, breaks, and daily routines. These apps work well alongside structured class study.
Focused vocabulary practice and bite-sized lessons for IELTS. The vocabulary lists are built around words that frequently appear in IELTS Reading passages. Free version has useful content.
Free spaced-repetition flashcard app. Create your own vocabulary cards from words you encounter in reading practice. Spaced repetition is one of the most scientifically proven ways to memorise vocabulary long-term.
Download the TED or BBC Sounds app and listen to talks and news in English every day. 20–30 minutes of authentic English listening daily builds your accent recognition and processing speed faster than IELTS drills alone.
Record yourself answering IELTS Speaking Part 1 and Part 2 questions and play it back. This is a free, high-impact exercise — most students are surprised by the hesitations and errors they could not notice while speaking.

How to Use These Resources
Materials only work when you use them systematically. Here is a simple weekly routine that works for most students aiming to improve by 0.5–1.0 band.
Complete one full Listening & Reading section from Cambridge IELTS. Check answers and study mistakes.
Write one Task 1 and one Task 2. Time yourself. Compare with model answers. Identify 2 areas to improve.
Record yourself answering 5 speaking questions. Listen back. Note hesitations, grammar errors, vocabulary limits.
Take a full timed mock test (all 4 modules). Rest. Review results on Monday and adjust your focus areas.
Note: This plan works best with guided feedback from an instructor. Book a free orientation at Woodberry Place to get a personalised study plan for your target band.
